At the end of everything
the only gift god gave us
is the gift of oblivian
freedom from all the mistakes
we live to regret
despite the other lessons
like the one I learned
far too late in life
that every day
we're born again
and the companion lesson
learned later still
we'd make the same mistakes
over and over again
every morning
until we die
unless we learn
that being given another day
being given a new beginning
is an empty gift
without the wisdom
to take the gift
and do something
different tomorrow
