What are you thinking

You may not think that I wonder what you are thinking
or you may listen and know that is far from the case
whether haiku or full paragraphs
what passes for poetry here has an element of query
it asks questions which are not properly answered
sometimes clearly, is there rejection or introspection
more often the inquiry is circular
tracking thoughts movements; most often a series
jumping almost randomly from question to answer
tied only loosely with gossamer thread to what preceded
sometimes focused as with study and occasionally like
those right before you fall asleeps, half dream, half reality
which is what we are, in truth, not us as people
but us together, half truth, half dream, hope
and despair when the aspirations are not met
when the proposals are met with rejection, inattention, misunderstanding
and yet the thoughts move on
unwilling to be unhappy in a world so filled with happiness
opportunities to be happy, the joy of a warm afternoon,
a cold shower, a hot tub or a cool swimming pool
a kind word from a friend or the opportunity to help a stranger
work well done and a job finally complete
and occasionally, when everything works out well
a few moments you can share with an old friend or new lover
or, if you are especially lucky a new friend and an old lover
or some such nonsense, my mind wanders and i wonder
what are you thinking now?
