The Whale Lawyer Chapter 1-a short story

Chapter 1
“I’m leaving early,” Hyatt Harpoon said as he stuck one document back into an envelope stapled to a file and limped over to put a letter on one of the stacks on the secretary’s  desk.  No one else was in the office other than Guy Hayes.  Guy was another lawyer who owned the building.  Hyatt  shared his office, no rented his office, from Guy and occasionally used Guy’s secretary.  Hyatt’s hand shook slightly as the paper left it.
Guy looked up from his computer screen.  Guy had a fairly successful practice and was able to supplement the mixed clientele with real estate holdings scattered around the St. Pete community.  He thought about mentioning that the rent would be three months past due tomorrow, but Hyatt looked a little pale today and he decided to keep his mouth shut.  While he knew it was a mistake to let rent slide, he also liked having another attorney who he could bounce ideas off of.  He knew Hyatt had lost a lot when he divorced his wife.

After Hyatt left, Guy walked over to the secretary’s desk and picked up the paper.  It was a notice from the court with a show cause hearing why an accounting had not been filed in the Richard Clampee estate.  He thought about this for a minute.  Ah yes, Hyatt told him that the case included a referral on a painkiller overdose which had destroyed Clampee’s liver, the immediate cause of death.  If the referral case hadn’t settled that would explain the lengthy accounting period.  It was really none of his business, Guy decided.  They shared office space, but their practices were separate.  Guy wondered if Hyatt had already spent the entire fee from the probate case or if some of it might go towards the past due rent.
